Victory at this battle raised Patriot morale and inspired the Americans to continue the struggle against the British, even after suffering disheartening defeats earlier that year. The battle opened about 3 p.m., when the 900 Patriots (including John Crockett, father of Davy Crockett) approached the steep base of the western ridge.
